Why autism is more common in women?

What is the frequency of autism? Autism in its “classic” is a relatively rare disorder, occurring no more than 0.1% of the general population. At one time it was believed that this violation is less common, but a number of recent studies have shown that approximately 1 in 1000 children who survived the first year of life, have an autistic syndrome.

Asperger’s tend to be much more common and is found in 3-4 of every 1,000 children.

Autism and other illnesses and diseases with autistic traits in people with mental retardation and attention deficit disorder, can occur as often as Asperger syndrome.

Conclusion. It seems that autism spectrum disorders and autism is more common than previously estimated. The overall level is 0.6 to 1% of the total number of school-age children. Even with increased mortality in groups with severe, the number of adults with autism are the same number of children with autism.

Among other things, this means that, in practice, each health department of children with autism spectrum disorders in their patients.

Gender

As we know, autism is more common among men than among women. Clinics usually detect three times as many children with this disorder. However, several studies in the general population of men show that excessive amounts of male adults with autism is less pronounced. This shows that in some cases there is no diagnosis woman. This may be due to that autism occurs in women a little different. Girls – with or without autism – can speak more advanced social skills than boys. It can lead to the presence of girls with slightly different signs of autism. Language level can be higher, external social skills may mask a hidden deficit of empathy and hobbies (eg, dolls, animals, people), it may be difficult to identify the presence of typical autistic traits. Some of these girls are described as having a “deficit in social interaction and learning problems.” Some of them show “pathological avoidance” (girls who often say “no” and refuse to cooperate), the other girls can be diagnosed with atypical variants of “selective mutism” (this is the case when someone speaks normally in the presence of certain individuals, but speaks very little or not at all, in the company of others).

Asperger syndrome is more common in men. The male to female ratio is 3 to 10, but it is too early to conclude that reflects the actual situation.

Other diseases such as autism are usually more common in women than in men. This group of diseases includes many cases of severe epilepsy, pervasive developmental delay and intellectual disabilities. This middle group tends to have a nearly equal distribution of cases between the sexes.
