Autism Awareness is the key to early intervention

Autism, often called autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a series of complex disorders related to brain development. Although the characteristics and severity of symptoms of autism vary greatly from child to child, most frequently observed symptoms reveal difficulties in the areas of verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction and repetitive behaviors incidence. The diagnosis of autism has increased dramatically in recent years. One person in every 160 children born in Canada eventually diagnosed with autism. Autism is four to five times more likely to be diagnosed in boys than in girls.

It seems that the underlying cause of autism occurs during early brain development. Although research is ongoing, autism appears to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The most common signs of autism tend to be between the ages of two and three years. Efforts to diagnose autism as early as possible is particularly important because early intervention behavioral therapies can improve outcomes for children and families. Improving outcomes for children with autism is closely aligned with autism awareness by parents and health professionals.

Early signs of autism

Generally, children diagnosed with autism have difficulty participating in normal social interaction. Even during the first year of life, an autistic child can not grasp the finger of a loving mother, or can not seem to recognize his name as they grow and develop physically. They can not babble like most babies show interest in the people around them. Young children with autism seem unable to play the game and often prefer to play alone.
