Conditions commonly used Dermatology

This is a condensed glossary of terms that I found most often:

Acne – an inflammatory disease of the substances oil glands, characterized by thick secretions clog pores of the skin resulting in pimples, especially on the face, back and chest, and in severe cases, cysts and resulting nodule scars.

Age spots – also known as “liver spots”, these flat brown spots on the skin are caused by sun exposure and aging.

Antioxidants – vitamin A (in combination with beta-carotene), C and E that protect and repair cells by neutralizing free radicals.

Basal cell carcinoma – a type of skin cancer associated with long-term exposure to the sun that forms the base of the epidermis of the skin.

Shin – is a clogged pore through hardened oils and dead skin cells. The tip of the blackhead is usually visible at the opening of the pores.

Chemical peeling – is a solution that is applied to the skin to remove damaged outer layers.

Dermabrasion – is a method using a rotating brush to scrape the outer surface of the dermis.

Dermatitis – is inflammation of the skin.

Eczema – is an inflammation of the skin that can cause redness, itching and flaking.

Epidermis – the outer non-sensitive layer of the skin covering the layer of real skin.

Exfoliate – to separate the thin layer from the outer layer of cells of the membrane.

Follicle – is a tree in the surface through which the hair grows.

Laser resurfacing – is a laser procedure to remove fine lines, wrinkles and age spots, in an effort to eliminate signs of aging.

Melamine – a chemical in the body that gives hair and skin its color only.

Melanoma – is a cancer of the skin to form generally develops from a mole that can be fatal.

Mole – a small congenital slightly elevated spot or stain on the skin, usually dark and sometimes hairy.

Weal – is an acne lesion that appears as a small red bump on the skin.

Psoriasis – skin condition identified by red, raised, scaly patches of skin.

Rosacea – this skin condition represents prominent veins and occasional swelling.

Sclerotherapy – treatment of injecting a special solution to reduce the appearance of varicose veins and spider veins.

Sebaceous glands – are producing oil glands of the skin that hold the hair follicles.

Seborrheic dermatitis – scalp condition associated with scaling and itching, or also known as dandruff, which can also develop on the face.

Skin biopsy – a diagnostic procedure in which a portion of the skin is removed for examination in a laboratory.

Spider veins – appear as small red / purple veins as sunlight under the skin.

Subcutis – a layer of fat under the skin.

Hives – also known as hives, itching skin areas reddish arise.

Varicose veins – appear as blue lumps under the skin of the large blood vessels. There may be pain, swelling and other associated symptoms.

Whitehead – caused by a clogged hair follicle resulting in injury closed acne.
